One-to-one tuition: From £72 per hour

National 5 Biology is one of the most popular science qualifications within the Scottish education system and provides pupils with an engaging introduction to the study of living organisms and the biological processes that sustain life. The course develops scientific understanding while encouraging pupils to think critically, analyse evidence and apply biological knowledge to real-world situations.

Biology helps pupils understand many of the issues that shape the modern world, from genetics and human health to biodiversity, environmental sustainability and biotechnology. It is an academically rewarding subject that provides an excellent foundation for progression to Higher Biology and a wide range of STEM-related pathways.

Many pupils enjoy Biology at National 5 but find the transition from earlier science courses more challenging than expected. The course requires pupils not only to learn new content but also to interpret data, evaluate evidence, solve problems and apply their understanding to unfamiliar contexts. Examination questions increasingly reward genuine understanding rather than simple memorisation.

At Aquinas Tuition, our specialist Biology tutors help pupils build secure subject knowledge, develop confidence and strengthen the scientific skills required for examination success. Whether a pupil is aiming to improve their understanding, achieve a strong pass or secure an A grade, our tuition is tailored to their individual needs and academic goals.

Most lessons are delivered online, allowing families throughout Scotland and across the UK to access expert National 5 Biology tuition. In-person tuition may occasionally be available depending on tutor and pupil location.

Understanding National 5 Biology

The Qualifications Scotland National 5 Biology course develops both biological knowledge and scientific skills. Pupils are expected to understand key biological concepts while also developing the ability to analyse information, evaluate evidence and apply their knowledge in new situations.

The course is organised into three broad areas:

  • Cell Biology
  • Multicellular Organisms
  • Life on Earth

Alongside these topics, pupils develop a range of scientific skills including:

  • Applying biological knowledge
  • Processing information
  • Analysing data
  • Drawing conclusions
  • Evaluating evidence
  • Solving problems
  • Communicating scientific ideas effectively

Success in National 5 Biology depends upon developing both subject knowledge and scientific reasoning. At Aquinas Tuition, we help pupils strengthen both.

I’m so grateful for all of his help

Solomon is an absolutely brilliant tutor and overall wonderful human being. After two years of being tutored by him, I have never been more prepared to do my IB Maths exam this May. Although this year has been absolutely awful in terms of exams for maths (May 2025), I have been awarded a very strong 7 in maths — something I struggled with for a while, since I was always on the verge of a 6 and a 7. We have covered the entire syllabus months in advance, giving me so much more time and opportunity for revision. Sol has also been super helpful with checking over my maths, allowing me to finish the coursework much earlier and giving me more time to make any changes. I’m so grateful for all of his help and I will always remember our lessons. Thank you, Sol.

Patient and confidence-building support

In exams my daughter was struggling with confidence more than anything. Physics felt overwhelming to her. Sam was very patient and calm, and didn’t make her feel silly for asking questions. She ended up doing better than she expected in her Physics exams.

The tuition made a big difference

My son and I were both really pleased with the tuition he got from Jonny. As well as giving my son advice on how to answer questions he gave my son confidence that he was on the right track and my son found that very reassuring. My son said the exam went well and he felt that the tuition made a big difference. I would definitely recommend using Aquinas Tuition.

Cell Biology

Cell Biology introduces pupils to the structures and processes that underpin life at a cellular level. This area of the course explores how cells function, how genetic information is stored and transmitted, and how living organisms obtain and utilise energy.

Pupils encounter topics including cell structure, transport across cell membranes, DNA and chromosomes, protein production, enzymes, respiration and genetic engineering.

Many pupils find this area challenging because it introduces a significant amount of new terminology and requires them to understand processes that cannot be directly observed. Concepts such as protein synthesis, enzyme action and genetic technologies often appear abstract when first encountered.

Our tutors help pupils develop a secure understanding of these topics by focusing on the biological principles that connect them. Rather than relying solely on memorisation, pupils learn how biological systems operate and why these processes are essential for life.

This deeper understanding often makes it easier to tackle application-style examination questions and provides strong foundations for future study.

Multicellular Organisms

This area of the course explores how complex organisms function and how different biological systems work together.

Pupils develop their understanding of topics such as cell division, reproduction, inheritance, control and communication, transport systems and the organisation of tissues and organs within living organisms.

Success in this area depends upon recognising the connections between different biological processes. Examination questions frequently require pupils to explain how systems interact and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar examples.

Many pupils find it helpful to move beyond viewing topics as separate units and instead develop a broader understanding of how living organisms function as integrated systems.

Our tutors help pupils make these connections while strengthening their ability to interpret information and communicate biological ideas clearly.

Life on Earth

Life on Earth focuses on the relationships between organisms and their environments while exploring some of the wider ecological and environmental themes within Biology.

Pupils study ecosystems, biodiversity, photosynthesis, energy transfer, food production and the evolution of species. These topics encourage pupils to think on a larger scale and consider how living organisms interact within complex biological systems.

This area often appeals to pupils because it connects biological theory to contemporary issues such as environmental sustainability, conservation and food security.

Examination questions frequently require pupils to analyse data, interpret ecological information and evaluate evidence. Developing confidence in these skills can significantly improve overall performance.

At Aquinas Tuition, we help pupils develop both the scientific understanding and analytical thinking needed to approach these questions successfully.

Scientific Inquiry and Practical Skills

Practical investigation forms an important part of National 5 Biology.

Throughout the course, pupils are expected to develop the skills used by scientists when planning investigations, collecting evidence and evaluating results.

These skills include:

  • Planning investigations
  • Identifying variables
  • Collecting and processing data
  • Presenting results
  • Evaluating procedures
  • Drawing conclusions from evidence

Many examination questions are rooted in practical contexts and require pupils to apply their understanding of scientific investigation.

For this reason, our tutors place significant emphasis on helping pupils develop confidence with practical skills and experimental analysis.

Data Analysis and Problem Solving

One of the defining features of National 5 Biology is the emphasis placed upon scientific thinking.

Pupils are regularly asked to:

  • Interpret graphs
  • Analyse tables
  • Process numerical information
  • Identify patterns and trends
  • Draw conclusions
  • Evaluate evidence

These questions often prove more challenging than straightforward recall questions because they require pupils to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar situations.

Our tutors teach pupils how to approach data systematically and develop effective strategies for tackling problem-solving questions with confidence.

Developing Examination Technique

Many pupils understand Biology well but struggle to translate that understanding into examination success.

Common difficulties include:

  • Misreading questions
  • Missing key marking points
  • Giving insufficient detail
  • Struggling with data-handling questions
  • Poor time management

At Aquinas Tuition, examination preparation forms an important part of our approach.

Support may include:

  • Past paper practice
  • Mark scheme analysis
  • Revision planning
  • Examination strategy
  • Question deconstruction
  • Confidence building

Developing effective examination technique often leads to significant improvements in performance.

Progression to Higher Biology

National 5 Biology provides the foundation for Higher Biology and future study in a wide range of scientific disciplines.

Developing a secure understanding at National 5 can make the transition to Higher significantly more manageable.

The course also helps pupils develop analytical, problem-solving and scientific reasoning skills that are valued across many academic subjects.

For pupils considering careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Environmental Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or related fields, National 5 Biology represents an important step within their academic journey.

Does Online Tuition Really Work?

It's one of the first questions many parents ask—and understandably so.

Can a child really stay engaged through an online lesson? Will they concentrate? Can they build a relationship with their tutor through a screen?

The simple answer is yes—provided online tuition is delivered well and your child is matched with the right tutor.

In fact, many of our pupils thrive online.

Online tuition allows us to match your child with the tutor who best suits their learning style, personality and academic needs, rather than simply the tutor who happens to live nearby. This means your child benefits from specialist teaching and a personalised learning experience, wherever you are in the UK.

Lessons are fully interactive, with tutors using digital whiteboards, shared resources and live problem-solving to keep pupils engaged throughout each session. Because lessons are delivered one-to-one, your child receives the tutor's full attention, allowing misconceptions to be addressed immediately and learning to progress at a pace that's right for them.

Many parents are surprised by how quickly children adapt. For today's generation, learning online feels completely natural, and after the first lesson it quickly becomes "how they meet their tutor."

Of course, online tuition isn't the right choice for every child. Some younger pupils, or children who find it particularly difficult to concentrate on a screen, may benefit more from face-to-face support. That's one of the reasons we begin with a free consultation and introductory assessment—to ensure we're recommending the approach that will genuinely benefit your child.

Our goal isn't simply to provide online tuition.

It's to provide the type of tuition that will help your child flourish.

Frequently asked questions

Do you support the current Qualifications Scotland National 5 Biology course?

Yes. Our tutors support pupils studying the current National 5 Biology specification and tailor lessons to individual strengths and areas for development.

Do you help pupils prepare for Higher Biology?

Yes. Many pupils use National 5 tuition to establish strong foundations before progressing to Higher Biology.

Can tuition help with examination technique?

Yes. Examination preparation forms an important part of our tuition and includes support with past papers, mark schemes and revision strategies.

Does online tuition really work?

Yes—provided it’s delivered well and your child is matched with the right tutor.

Our lessons are fully interactive and carefully planned to keep pupils engaged. Many parents are surprised by how naturally children adapt to learning online, and one-to-one tuition allows every lesson to be tailored to your child’s individual needs.

How often should my child have tuition?

For many pupils, one lesson per week provides a consistent and manageable pace of learning.

As examinations approach, some families choose to increase lesson frequency or arrange additional sessions during school holidays.

During your consultation, we’ll recommend a schedule that reflects your child’s needs, targets and timeline.

Do you support high-achieving pupils?

Absolutely. We regularly work with academically ambitious pupils seeking stretch and challenge.

How do you choose the right tutor for my child?

We don’t simply assign the next available tutor.

We begin with a free consultation to understand your child’s strengths, personality, learning style and goals. This allows us to carefully match them with a tutor who is best suited to support their learning and help them grow in confidence. For further information about our tuition process you can read more here.

What if my child doesn't get on with their tutor?

Building a positive relationship between tutor and pupil is incredibly important.

We take great care when matching children with tutors, but if we ever feel a different tutor would better meet your child’s needs, we’ll work with you to find the right solution.

Our priority is always ensuring your child feels comfortable, supported and confident in their learning.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

You’ll receive regular monthly progress reports outlining what your child has been working on, the progress they’ve made and the next steps in their learning journey.

We also encourage open communication, so you’ll always have the opportunity to discuss your child’s development with us.

Can you help if my child lacks confidence?

Absolutely.

In fact, many families contact us because their child has the ability to succeed but lacks confidence in their own skills.

Building confidence is central to our approach. As children begin to understand concepts and content more deeply and experience regular success, their confidence naturally grows alongside their academic ability.

Will tutoring guarantee my child achieves their goals?

No tutor can honestly guarantee absolute success, and we believe it’s important to be transparent about that.

Many factors influence outcomes, including the child’s starting point, the teaching they receive within school and their commitment to learning out of school.

What we can promise is personalised teaching, expert guidance and a structured programme designed to help your child reach their full potential.

What happens during the free consultation?

The consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know your child and understand what you’re hoping to achieve.

We’ll discuss your child’s strengths, areas where they may need support, their targets and answer any questions you have about our tuition process.

Following the consultation, we’ll recommend the most appropriate next steps, with no obligation to book tuition.
