Applying to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge is one of the most demanding and competitive admissions processes within UK higher education.

Each year, thousands of highly capable applicants compete for a limited number of places across a wide range of subjects. Strong academic grades are essential, but they are rarely sufficient on their own. Successful applicants are typically able to demonstrate exceptional academic potential, genuine intellectual curiosity and a deep engagement with their chosen discipline beyond the classroom.

At Aquinas Tuition, we provide specialist support for pupils considering applications to Oxford or Cambridge. Our guidance is designed to help applicants develop the academic skills, subject knowledge and intellectual confidence required to navigate the admissions process successfully.

We do not offer shortcuts or formulaic application strategies. Instead, we help pupils engage more deeply with their chosen subject, develop independent academic interests and prepare thoughtfully for the challenges of competitive university admissions.

Most support is delivered online, allowing applicants across the UK and internationally to access specialist guidance.

Understanding the Oxbridge Admissions Process

Oxford and Cambridge admissions are designed to identify academic potential rather than simply reward examination performance.

While admissions procedures vary between subjects and colleges, applicants may encounter:

  • Additional admissions assessments
  • Written work submissions
  • Academic interviews
  • Subject-specific tasks
  • Personal statement review
  • Contextual admissions considerations

Throughout the process, admissions tutors seek evidence that a pupil possesses the intellectual aptitude and academic potential to thrive within a demanding tutorial or supervision-based learning environment.

Our support focuses on helping applicants understand these expectations and prepare accordingly.

Our Process

Support begins with an initial consultation during which we discuss academic interests, intended courses and long-term aspirations.

Following this, we match applicants with tutors who possess relevant subject expertise and experience supporting competitive university applications.

Preparation is tailored to the individual and may involve ongoing academic mentoring, interview preparation, admissions test support or wider subject exploration.

She helped me win my place at Oxford

… Due to [Ms Mouskis’] passionate and attentive teaching method, I was encouraged by her to pursue English Literature further into A level, where I achieved an A. Ms Mouskis taught me English Literature for three years at GCSE level. Her teaching style allowed me to improve and progress from a grade 5 to a grade 8 in my formal GCSE exam. It is particularly due to her very detailed and constructive feedback that guided me to adapt a more sophisticated style of writing. Ms Mouskis tends to focus on writer’s intent and how every piece of literature we study is significant, allowing me to connect with novels on a more personal level. Due to her passionate and attentive teaching method, I was encouraged by her to pursue English Literature further into A level, where I achieved an A. Beyond her capabilities as an English teacher, she worked closely with me to perfect my university application that granted me a place at Oxford university. I’m incredibly thankful for her for being such a caring teacher and going beyond pure academia but also showing a genuine interest in my well being as a person.

Developing Academic Depth

One of the most common misconceptions about Oxbridge applications is that success depends upon accumulating impressive extracurricular achievements.

In reality, Oxford and Cambridge place far greater emphasis on academic engagement.

Admissions tutors are often interested in questions such as:

  • Has the applicant explored the subject beyond the school curriculum?
  • Can they think critically about complex ideas?
  • Are they genuinely curious about the discipline?
  • Can they engage thoughtfully with unfamiliar material?
  • Do they enjoy intellectual challenge?

Our tutors help pupils develop stronger academic profiles through meaningful subject exploration.

Depending on the discipline, this may involve:

  • Wider reading
  • Academic articles
  • Lectures and podcasts
  • Research projects
  • Essay discussions
  • Critical analysis
  • Supercurricular activities

The objective is not simply to create application material but to develop genuine intellectual engagement.

Subject-Specific Preparation

Successful Oxbridge applicants often demonstrate a level of subject understanding that extends beyond examination specifications.

Our support is tailored to each applicant’s intended course, and we specialise in the Arts subjects.

Whether a pupil is applying for:

  • English
  • History
  • Law
  • Philosophy
  • Politics

our guidance is adapted to reflect the expectations associated with that subject.

Lessons often focus on exploring ideas, discussing academic concepts and developing analytical thinking rather than simply reviewing examination content.

Admissions Test Preparation

Many Oxford and Cambridge courses require applicants to complete admissions assessments.

These assessments are designed to evaluate skills such as:

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving
  • Analytical reasoning
  • Subject aptitude
  • Academic potential

Our tutors can help pupils become familiar with assessment formats while developing the skills required to approach challenging questions confidently.

Support may include:

  • Understanding question styles
  • Developing problem-solving approaches
  • Timed practice
  • Discussion of specimen materials
  • Building examination confidence

Preparation focuses on developing underlying skills rather than memorising techniques.

Academic Interview Preparation

The Oxbridge interview is unlike most conventional interviews.

Rather than assessing rehearsed answers, interviewers are typically interested in how applicants think.

Questions often explore:

  • Academic ideas
  • Problem-solving approaches
  • Interpretation of unfamiliar material
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Analytical reasoning

Interviewers are rarely looking for perfect answers. Instead, they want to understand how a pupil engages with new information and responds to intellectual challenge.

Our support helps applicants become more comfortable with this style of discussion through:

  • Academic conversations
  • Mock interviews
  • Critical thinking exercises
  • Subject-specific questioning
  • Confidence building

The goal is to help pupils approach interviews as opportunities for intellectual discussion rather than high-pressure interrogations.

Building Intellectual Confidence

Many strong applicants underestimate their own abilities.

Others become overwhelmed by the reputation and competitiveness of Oxford and Cambridge.

Our role is to help pupils approach the process with perspective, confidence and realistic expectations.

Through structured academic discussion and thoughtful preparation, applicants often become more comfortable articulating ideas, defending viewpoints and engaging with challenging concepts.

These skills remain valuable regardless of the eventual admissions outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Does Aquinas support with Oxbridge interview preparation?

Yes – our tutors are highly experienced in preparing pupils for interviews and can work on these skills specifically if requested.

Can you help my child with their Personal Statement?

Our tutors have plenty of experience mentoring pupils through the Personal Statement process and can absolutely support your child through the writing process, whilst ensuring that the work remains their own.

How often should my child have tuition?

For many pupils, one lesson per week provides a consistent and manageable pace of progress for university admission preparation.

As UCAS, Personal Statements, admissions exams and interviews are generally front-loaded in the Autumn/Winter term of Year 13/S6 some parents request multiple tuition sessions a week, so their child feels fully prepared and supported.

During your consultation, we’ll recommend a schedule that reflects your child’s needs, targets and timeline.

Does online tuition really work?

Yes—provided it’s delivered well and your child is matched with the right tutor.

Our lessons are fully interactive and carefully planned to keep pupils engaged. Many parents are surprised by how naturally children adapt to learning online, and one-to-one tuition allows every lesson to be tailored to your child’s individual needs.

How do you choose the right tutor for my child?

We don’t simply assign the next available tutor.

We begin with a free consultation to understand your child’s strengths, personality, learning style and goals, target universities and courses. This allows us to carefully match them with a tutor who is best suited to support their application and help them grow in confidence. For further information about our tuition process you can read more here.

What if my child doesn't get on with their tutor?

Building a positive relationship between tutor and pupil is incredibly important.

We take great care when matching children with tutors, but if we ever feel a different tutor would better meet your child’s needs, we’ll work with you to find the right solution.

Our priority is always ensuring your child feels comfortable, supported and confident in their learning.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

You’ll receive regular monthly progress reports outlining what your child has been working on, the progress they’ve made and next steps.

We also encourage open communication, so you’ll always have the opportunity to discuss your child’s development with us.

Can you help if my child lacks confidence?

Absolutely.

In fact, many families contact us because their child has the ability to succeed but lacks confidence in their own skills.

Building confidence is central to our approach. As children begin to understand concepts and content more deeply and experience regular success, their confidence naturally grows alongside their academic ability.

Will tutoring guarantee my child achieves their goals?

No tutor can honestly guarantee absolute success, and we believe it’s important to be transparent about that.

Many factors influence outcomes, including the child’s starting point, the teaching they receive within school and their commitment to working out of school.

What we can promise is personalised teaching, expert guidance and a structured programme designed to help your child reach their full potential.

What happens during the free consultation?

The consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know your child and understand what you’re hoping to achieve.

We’ll discuss your child’s strengths, areas where they may need support, their targets and answer any questions you have about our tuition process.

Following the consultation, we’ll recommend the most appropriate next steps, with no obligation to book tuition.
