One-to-one tuition: From £72 per hour

The Key Stage 3 years lay the foundations for future success in English. During Years 7, 8 and 9, pupils are expected to become more confident readers, more thoughtful analysts and more capable writers. They encounter increasingly challenging texts, develop their ability to express ideas clearly and begin to engage with literature in greater depth.

For some pupils, this transition happens naturally. Others find the demands of secondary English more difficult, particularly when analytical writing, essay structure or textual interpretation become more prominent. Many capable pupils simply benefit from more individualised support than is possible within a busy classroom.

Our specialist KS3 English tuition is designed to strengthen core literacy skills, develop academic confidence and prepare pupils for future success at GCSE and beyond. Lessons are carefully tailored to the individual pupil, whether they require additional support, greater challenge or preparation for higher academic attainment.

Most tuition is delivered online, providing pupils with access to specialist tutors regardless of location. In-person tuition may occasionally be available depending on tutor availability and location.

What is involved in KS3 English Tuition?

Building Strong Foundations in English

Success in English depends on a broad range of interconnected skills. A pupil may be a confident reader but struggle to organise written responses. Another may have strong ideas but find it difficult to express them clearly and effectively.

Our tuition focuses on developing the underlying skills that support long-term progress across all areas of English.

Lessons are adapted to a pupil’s age, school curriculum and current attainment, ensuring support remains relevant and appropriately challenging.

When Confidence Has Been Knocked

English can sometimes feel highly subjective to pupils. A disappointing assessment or unclear feedback may lead capable pupils to believe they are simply “not good at English”.

Tuition provides an opportunity to work through difficulties in a supportive environment where pupils can ask questions, develop skills gradually and gain a clearer understanding of what successful responses look like.

As understanding improves, confidence often follows.

Support for High-Achieving Pupils

Many academically ambitious pupils benefit from additional challenge beyond the classroom.

For these pupils, lessons may include:

  • More sophisticated literary analysis
  • Exposure to demanding texts
  • Advanced vocabulary and written expression
  • Development of academic essay-writing
  • Preparation for scholarship or selective school assessments where appropriate

Strong English skills are valuable not only for examination success but across a wide range of future academic pathways.

She’s finally confident in English

My daughter now feels confident in English lessons again. She told me she finally understands what her teacher is explaining in class — that’s real progress.

The most lovely tutor to my daughter

Alice was the most lovely tutor to my daughter for higher English. Alice taught her the complete higher English course as my daughter was homeschooling. She individualised the course to suit her learning style and to help with her dyslexia. As a result my daughter received an A Band One.

The tuition made a big difference

My son and I were both really pleased with the tuition he got from Jonny. As well as giving my son advice on how to answer questions he gave my son confidence that he was on the right track and my son found that very reassuring. My son said the exam went well and he felt that the tuition made a big difference. I would definitely recommend using Aquinas Tuition.

From a grade 5 to a grade 8

Ms Mouskis taught me English Literature for three years at GCSE level. Her teaching style allowed me to improve and progress from a grade 5 to a grade 8 in my formal GCSE exam. It is particularly due to her very detailed and constructive feedback that guided me to adapt a more sophisticated style of writing. Ms Mouskis tends to focus on writer’s intent and how every piece of literature we study is significant, allowing me to connect with novels on a more personal level. Due to her passionate and attentive teaching method, I was encouraged by her to pursue English Literature further into A level, where I achieved an A. Beyond her capabilities as an English teacher, she worked closely with me to perfect my university application that granted me a place at Oxford university. I’m incredibly thankful for her for being such a caring teacher and going beyond pure academia but also showing a genuine interest in my well being as a person.

Detailed, line by line feedback on my practice essays

Ms Mouskis supported me through both my GCSE and A-Level English studies. Her teaching style and interactive discussions made topics genuinely engaging. In particular, her after school tutoring club helped me fill in the gaps where I struggled most. I felt comfortable to share my weaknesses with her as I entered secondary school still new to the English Language. Her confidence in me pushed me to take English Literature A-level although I knew it would be a challenge. She would give me detailed, line by line feedback on my practice essays, showing me exactly how to improve my analysis which I found most helpful.

Reading and Literary Analysis

A central part of KS3 English involves developing the ability to read thoughtfully and engage critically with texts.

Pupils are supported in:

  • Understanding explicit and implicit meaning
  • Exploring character, theme and setting
  • Analysing language choices
  • Examining structure and narrative methods
  • Supporting ideas with textual evidence
  • Developing independent interpretations

As pupils progress through KS3, they are increasingly expected to move beyond simple comprehension and begin explaining how writers create meaning and influence readers.

We help pupils develop these analytical skills in a structured and accessible way.

Developing Strong Writing Skills

Writing becomes increasingly sophisticated throughout secondary school.

Lessons may focus on:

  • Creative writing
  • Descriptive and narrative techniques
  • Persuasive and transactional writing
  • Vocabulary development
  • Sentence structure and control
  • Paragraph organisation

Particular attention is given to helping pupils communicate ideas clearly and effectively while adapting their writing to different audiences and purposes.

Many pupils improve rapidly once they understand how strong writing is constructed and how successful writers achieve particular effects.

Grammar, Accuracy and Technical Skills

Strong written communication requires accuracy as well as creativity.

Where appropriate, tuition may support:

  • Grammar and sentence construction
  • Punctuation and spelling
  • Vocabulary development
  • Editing and proofreading skills
  • Formal and academic writing conventions

These skills underpin success across the wider curriculum, not just within English lessons.

Preparing for GCSE English

One of the most valuable aspects of KS3 tuition is ensuring pupils enter GCSE study in England or National 5 study in Scotland with secure foundations already in place.

Our tutors help pupils develop:

  • Analytical essay-writing skills
  • Confidence discussing literature
  • Effective revision habits
  • Independent reading skills
  • Critical thinking and interpretation
  • Clear written communication

For pupils in the later years of KS3, lessons may begin introducing national exam-style approaches to textual analysis and extended written responses, helping the transition feel considerably less daunting.

Does Online Tuition Really Work?

It's one of the first questions many parents ask—and understandably so.

Can a child really stay engaged through an online lesson? Will they concentrate? Can they build a relationship with their tutor through a screen?

The simple answer is yes—provided online tuition is delivered well and your child is matched with the right tutor.

In fact, many of our pupils thrive online.

Online tuition allows us to match your child with the tutor who best suits their learning style, personality and academic needs, rather than simply the tutor who happens to live nearby. This means your child benefits from specialist teaching and a personalised learning experience, wherever you are in the UK.

Lessons are fully interactive, with tutors using digital whiteboards, shared resources and live problem-solving to keep pupils engaged throughout each session. Because lessons are delivered one-to-one, your child receives the tutor's full attention, allowing misconceptions to be addressed immediately and learning to progress at a pace that's right for them.

Many parents are surprised by how quickly children adapt. For today's generation, learning online feels completely natural, and after the first lesson it quickly becomes "how they meet their tutor."

Of course, online tuition isn't the right choice for every child. Some younger pupils, or children who find it particularly difficult to concentrate on a screen, may benefit more from face-to-face support. That's one of the reasons we begin with a free consultation and introductory assessment—to ensure we're recommending the approach that will genuinely benefit your child.

Our goal isn't simply to provide online tuition.

It's to provide the type of tuition that will help your child flourish.

Frequently asked questions

Which year groups do you support?

We provide KS3 English tuition for pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 in England and S1 and S2 in Scotland.

Can tuition help prepare pupils for GCSE/National 5 English?

Yes. A key focus of KS3 tuition is developing the analytical and writing skills that underpin future GCSE or National 5 success.

Do you support high-achieving pupils?

Absolutely. Many pupils seek tuition not because they are struggling, but because they want greater challenge and more advanced academic development.

Is tuition mainly online?

Yes. Most lessons are delivered online, although in-person tuition may occasionally be available depending on location.

Does online tuition really work?

Yes—provided it’s delivered well and your child is matched with the right tutor.

Our lessons are fully interactive and carefully planned to keep pupils engaged. Many parents are surprised by how naturally children adapt to learning online, and one-to-one tuition allows every lesson to be tailored to your child’s individual needs.

How do you choose the right tutor for my child?

We don’t simply assign the next available tutor.

We begin with a free consultation to understand your child’s strengths, personality, learning style and goals. This allows us to carefully match them with a tutor who is best suited to support their learning and help them grow in confidence. For further information about our tuition process you can read more here.

What if my child doesn't get on with their tutor?

Building a positive relationship between tutor and pupil is incredibly important.

We take great care when matching children with tutors, but if we ever feel a different tutor would better meet your child’s needs, we’ll work with you to find the right solution.

Our priority is always ensuring your child feels comfortable, supported and confident in their learning.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

You’ll receive regular monthly progress reports outlining what your child has been working on, the progress they’ve made and the next steps in their learning journey.

We also encourage open communication, so you’ll always have the opportunity to discuss your child’s development with us.

Can you help if my child lacks confidence?

Absolutely.

In fact, many families contact us because their child has the ability to succeed but lacks confidence in their own skills.

Building confidence is central to our approach. As children begin to understand concepts and content more deeply and experience regular success, their confidence naturally grows alongside their academic ability.

Will tutoring guarantee my child achieves their goals?

No tutor can honestly guarantee absolute success, and we believe it’s important to be transparent about that.

Many factors influence outcomes, including the child’s starting point, the teaching they receive within school and their commitment to learning out of school.

What we can promise is personalised teaching, expert guidance and a structured programme designed to help your child reach their full potential.

What happens during the free consultation?

The consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know your child and understand what you’re hoping to achieve.

We’ll discuss your child’s strengths, areas where they may need support, their targets and answer any questions you have about our tuition process.

Following the consultation, we’ll recommend the most appropriate next steps, with no obligation to book tuition.
