One-to-one tuition: From £72 per hour

Higher English is one of the most important qualifications within the Scottish education system. It is widely recognised by universities, colleges and employers, and strong performance can play a significant role in securing progression to Advanced Higher study, competitive university courses and a wide range of future career pathways.

The course requires pupils to engage with literature and language at a more sophisticated level than National 5. Expectations increase significantly, particularly in analytical writing, critical evaluation and the ability to communicate ideas with precision and maturity. Pupils are expected to move beyond straightforward understanding and begin developing more thoughtful, independent responses to both literary and non-fiction texts.

Many pupils find the transition from National 5 to Higher English challenging. Questions become more demanding, essays require greater depth and examination responses are expected to demonstrate stronger analysis and evaluation. Skills that may have secured good marks at National 5 often need to be refined further in order to achieve success at Higher.

Our specialist Higher English tuition is designed to help pupils develop the confidence, knowledge and skills required to perform at their best. Whether a pupil is aiming to secure a pass, improve predicted grades or work towards an A grade, lessons are tailored carefully to individual needs and academic goals.

Most tuition is delivered online, allowing pupils to access specialist support regardless of location. In-person tuition may occasionally be available depending on tutor availability and location.

Tuition Aligned to the Higher English Course

Our tutors provide support aligned to the Higher English qualification and its assessment requirements.

The course develops a pupil’s ability to:

  • Read and analyse increasingly complex texts
  • Evaluate ideas, arguments and viewpoints
  • Develop independent critical responses
  • Communicate effectively through extended writing
  • Engage with literature in greater depth
  • Demonstrate accuracy and control in written expression

Assessment is divided across three key areas:

  • Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (UAE)
  • Critical Reading
  • Portfolio Writing

Each component assesses different but closely related skills. Tuition is adapted carefully to reflect the individual strengths and development areas of each pupil while ensuring preparation remains closely aligned to qualification requirements.

What is covered in Higher English?

When Confidence Has Been Knocked

Many capable pupils become frustrated when they consistently receive feedback such as “develop your analysis” or “evaluate in more detail” without fully understanding what this means in practice.

Others may perform well in class but struggle to reproduce that performance under examination conditions.

Tuition provides an opportunity to explore these challenges in a supportive one-to-one environment. Difficult concepts can be broken down clearly, examination expectations can be explained in detail and pupils can develop a more confident understanding of what success looks like.

As confidence grows, performance often improves alongside it.

She’s finally confident in English

My daughter now feels confident in English lessons again. She told me she finally understands what her teacher is explaining in class — that’s real progress.

The most lovely tutor to my daughter

Alice was the most lovely tutor to my daughter for higher English. Alice taught her the complete higher English course as my daughter was homeschooling. She individualised the course to suit her learning style and to help with her dyslexia. As a result my daughter received an A Band One.

The tuition made a big difference

My son and I were both really pleased with the tuition he got from Jonny. As well as giving my son advice on how to answer questions he gave my son confidence that he was on the right track and my son found that very reassuring. My son said the exam went well and he felt that the tuition made a big difference. I would definitely recommend using Aquinas Tuition.

From a grade 5 to a grade 8

Ms Mouskis taught me English Literature for three years at GCSE level. Her teaching style allowed me to improve and progress from a grade 5 to a grade 8 in my formal GCSE exam. It is particularly due to her very detailed and constructive feedback that guided me to adapt a more sophisticated style of writing. Ms Mouskis tends to focus on writer’s intent and how every piece of literature we study is significant, allowing me to connect with novels on a more personal level. Due to her passionate and attentive teaching method, I was encouraged by her to pursue English Literature further into A level, where I achieved an A. Beyond her capabilities as an English teacher, she worked closely with me to perfect my university application that granted me a place at Oxford university. I’m incredibly thankful for her for being such a caring teacher and going beyond pure academia but also showing a genuine interest in my well being as a person.

Detailed, line by line feedback on my practice essays

Ms Mouskis supported me through both my GCSE and A-Level English studies. Her teaching style and interactive discussions made topics genuinely engaging. In particular, her after school tutoring club helped me fill in the gaps where I struggled most. I felt comfortable to share my weaknesses with her as I entered secondary school still new to the English Language. Her confidence in me pushed me to take English Literature A-level although I knew it would be a challenge. She would give me detailed, line by line feedback on my practice essays, showing me exactly how to improve my analysis which I found most helpful.

Does Online Tuition Really Work?

It's one of the first questions many parents ask—and understandably so.

Can a child really stay engaged through an online lesson? Will they concentrate? Can they build a relationship with their tutor through a screen?

The simple answer is yes—provided online tuition is delivered well and your child is matched with the right tutor.

In fact, many of our pupils thrive online.

Online tuition allows us to match your child with the tutor who best suits their learning style, personality and academic needs, rather than simply the tutor who happens to live nearby. This means your child benefits from specialist teaching and a personalised learning experience, wherever you are in the UK.

Lessons are fully interactive, with tutors using digital whiteboards, shared resources and live problem-solving to keep pupils engaged throughout each session. Because lessons are delivered one-to-one, your child receives the tutor's full attention, allowing misconceptions to be addressed immediately and learning to progress at a pace that's right for them.

Many parents are surprised by how quickly children adapt. For today's generation, learning online feels completely natural, and after the first lesson it quickly becomes "how they meet their tutor."

Of course, online tuition isn't the right choice for every child. Some younger pupils, or children who find it particularly difficult to concentrate on a screen, may benefit more from face-to-face support. That's one of the reasons we begin with a free consultation and introductory assessment—to ensure we're recommending the approach that will genuinely benefit your child.

Our goal isn't simply to provide online tuition.

It's to provide the type of tuition that will help your child flourish.

Frequently asked questions

Do you follow the Higher English course?

Yes. Tuition is aligned to the Higher English qualification and adapted to school teaching and assessment requirements.

Can you help with both Reading for UAE and Critical Reading?

Absolutely. We provide support across all areas of the course, including Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation, Scottish Text study, Critical Essay preparation and portfolio skills.

Do you help with the portfolio?

Yes. We help pupils develop the broader writing skills required for successful portfolio work while ensuring all submitted work remains entirely their own.

Is tuition mainly online?

Yes. Most lessons are delivered online, although in-person tuition may occasionally be available depending on tutor and pupil location.

Does online tuition really work?

Yes—provided it’s delivered well and your child is matched with the right tutor.

Our lessons are fully interactive and carefully planned to keep pupils engaged. Many parents are surprised by how naturally children adapt to learning online, and one-to-one tuition allows every lesson to be tailored to your child’s individual needs.

How often should my child have tuition?

For many pupils, one lesson per week provides a consistent and manageable pace of learning.

As examinations approach, some families choose to increase lesson frequency or arrange additional sessions during school holidays.

During your consultation, we’ll recommend a schedule that reflects your child’s needs, targets and timeline.

Do you support high-achieving pupils?

Absolutely. We regularly work with academically ambitious pupils seeking stretch and challenge.

How do you choose the right tutor for my child?

We don’t simply assign the next available tutor.

We begin with a free consultation to understand your child’s strengths, personality, learning style and goals. This allows us to carefully match them with a tutor who is best suited to support their learning and help them grow in confidence. For further information about our tuition process you can read more here.

What if my child doesn't get on with their tutor?

Building a positive relationship between tutor and pupil is incredibly important.

We take great care when matching children with tutors, but if we ever feel a different tutor would better meet your child’s needs, we’ll work with you to find the right solution.

Our priority is always ensuring your child feels comfortable, supported and confident in their learning.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

You’ll receive regular monthly progress reports outlining what your child has been working on, the progress they’ve made and the next steps in their learning journey.

We also encourage open communication, so you’ll always have the opportunity to discuss your child’s development with us.

Can you help if my child lacks confidence?

Absolutely.

In fact, many families contact us because their child has the ability to succeed but lacks confidence in their own skills.

Building confidence is central to our approach. As children begin to understand concepts and content more deeply and experience regular success, their confidence naturally grows alongside their academic ability.

Will tutoring guarantee my child achieves their goals?

No tutor can honestly guarantee absolute success, and we believe it’s important to be transparent about that.

Many factors influence outcomes, including the child’s starting point, the teaching they receive within school and their commitment to learning out of school.

What we can promise is personalised teaching, expert guidance and a structured programme designed to help your child reach their full potential.

What happens during the free consultation?

The consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know your child and understand what you’re hoping to achieve.

We’ll discuss your child’s strengths, areas where they may need support, their targets and answer any questions you have about our tuition process.

Following the consultation, we’ll recommend the most appropriate next steps, with no obligation to book tuition.
