About Nicola

I grew up in London and took A Levels in English Literature, Drama, Biology and Modern Greek. After leaving school, I studied English Literature at the University of Hertfordshire. Following my degree, I worked in the City alongside tutoring and freelance writing part-time. I then travelled across Southeast Asia before returning to complete a PGCE in Secondary Education. Since beginning my teaching career, I have held several leadership roles, including Key Stage 5 coordinator, Deputy Head of Year and Head of Sixth Form. In these positions, I have led on Key Stage 5 transition, specialising in university applications, pastoral care and the development of the English curricula.

My top priority is helping students achieve their targets by building on their existing skills and prior knowledge. I believe that every student learns differently, so I am committed to adapting my lessons to suit individual strengths and areas for development. Creating an enjoyable and engaging learning environment is central to my teaching, as I know my students make the greatest progress when they are motivated.

Alongside this, I encourage students to develop a metacognitive understanding of their own learning, helping them to recognise the strategies that enable them to succeed independently. I am passionate about ensuring students appreciate the power of the English Language and the transferable skills that studying English Literature develops, from critical thinking and communication to empathy and analysis.

Most importantly, I strive to instil a love of Literature, as I believe it broadens students’ perspectives and deepens their understanding of the world around them. My teaching is underpinned by regular assessment and strong focus on identifying individual learning needs, ensuring every student receives the support and challenge they need to flourish.

Detailed, line by line feedback on my practice essays

Ms Mouskis supported me through both my GCSE and A-Level English studies. Her teaching style and interactive discussions made topics genuinely engaging. In particular, her after school tutoring club helped me fill in the gaps where I struggled most. I felt comfortable to share my weaknesses with her as I entered secondary school still new to the English Language. Her confidence in me pushed me to take English Literature A-level although I knew it would be a challenge. She would give me detailed, line by line feedback on my practice essays, showing me exactly how to improve my analysis which I found most helpful.

From a grade 5 to a grade 8

Ms Mouskis taught me English Literature for three years at GCSE level. Her teaching style allowed me to improve and progress from a grade 5 to a grade 8 in my formal GCSE exam. It is particularly due to her very detailed and constructive feedback that guided me to adapt a more sophisticated style of writing. Ms Mouskis tends to focus on writer’s intent and how every piece of literature we study is significant, allowing me to connect with novels on a more personal level. Due to her passionate and attentive teaching method, I was encouraged by her to pursue English Literature further into A level, where I achieved an A. Beyond her capabilities as an English teacher, she worked closely with me to perfect my university application that granted me a place at Oxford university. I’m incredibly thankful for her for being such a caring teacher and going beyond pure academia but also showing a genuine interest in my well being as a person.
