Physics and Mathematics tutor helping GCSE and A-level students master concepts, exam technique, and university preparation.
Throughout and following my degree I have tutored with MyTutor and Tutorful, covering GCSE and A-level physics and mathematics. I also worked for the Durham University Levelling Up: Aspire Higher programme as an A-level student mentor, where I gave advice on exam technique, assisted with personal statements and prepared students for life at university. Supplementing this I have worked extensively in science communication and outreach; I worked with the Durham University QLM team to produce animated outreach materials of their laser experiment and completed my master’s project in quantum physics communication to A-level physics students.
My teaching style primarily focuses on qualitative thinking and the development of a student’s intuition, as I find this to be the most critical aspect of examination success. By helping students develop a strong thought process and a deep understanding of fundamental concepts, they become equipped to tackle even the most challenging and unfamiliar problems, while also cultivating a genuine interest in what they’re studying. To facilitate this I utilise visual learning and analogy to adapt content to a student’s learning style, ensuring engagement. I supplement this with an exposure to a wide array of exam-style problems to apply and exercise this intuition whilst also building confidence and good exam technique.

In exams my daughter was struggling with confidence more than anything. Physics felt overwhelming to her. Sam was very patient and calm, and didn’t make her feel silly for asking questions. She ended up doing better than she expected in her Physics exams.

My son was really finding A level Physics hard and was losing confidence quite badly. The tutor explained things in a way that finally made sense to him, especially the harder topics. He started understanding why things work, not just learning answers. His grades improved and he feels much calmer going into exams now.
Sam is rather good at explaining concepts in different ways. When I struggled with a concept he used different methods of explaining it till I understood properly. Very patient — overall a good teacher.
